spring has begun
its yearly game
of hide and seek
bits of green emerge
the sun tries to shine
temperatures inch upward
days lengthen
children at recess shed their coats
drivers open car windows
people walk more briskly,
no longer afraid of slipping on unseen ice
the freedom of the game continues
until the weatherman announces
another storm is on the way
too soon to yell,
“Ollie Ollie oxen free!”
